ANA The Room: First Class Privacy, Business Class Price

ANA's The Room is one of aviation's best-kept secrets — or was, until the aviation press noticed it. A fully enclosed private suite, flying as business class, on one of the world's most consistent airlines. When you can get it, book it.

The Suite

The Room is exactly that: a room. Four walls, a door that closes fully, a lie-flat bed wide enough to sleep diagonally, and enough storage for a reasonable carry-on worth of belongings. The suite dimensions are closer to first class than business class. The door mechanism is smooth, the lock works, and the privacy is complete.

The interior design reflects ANA's Japanese aesthetic: calm, precise, uncluttered. The lighting is adjustable through a well-designed panel. The seat converts to a bed with a proper mattress topper, and the pillow selection is thoughtful.

The Staggered Business Alternative

Not all ANA long-haul aircraft have The Room. The alternative — the standard Business Staggered product — is a good seat but a significant step down. The herringbone configuration offers direct aisle access, the bed is lie-flat, and the service is the same. But the privacy difference is substantial.

Always confirm which product your aircraft carries before booking.

The Service

ANA's service is distinctively Japanese: precise, attentive, and non-intrusive. Crew appear when needed, disappear when not, and manage the balance better than almost any other airline. Requests are handled without theatrics. The overall effect is a cabin atmosphere that feels calm and considered throughout the flight.

The Food

Japanese cuisine in ANA business class is excellent. The Japanese meal option — available at booking and recommended — covers multiple courses including traditional dishes that are both authentic and well-executed at altitude. The Western option is respectable but the Japanese menu is the reason to choose it.

Sake selection is extensive. Use it.

Narita vs Haneda

ANA operates from both Tokyo airports. Narita (NRT) is further from central Tokyo — allow 90 minutes minimum for the transfer. Haneda (HND) is closer to the city and often has better domestic connections if you're continuing onwards. If the choice exists, Haneda is typically preferable for convenience.

The Verdict

The Room earns 9.0. It delivers first class privacy at business class prices on an airline with exceptional service. The caveat — aircraft inconsistency — is real, but when The Room is confirmed, it's one of the best experiences available in the sky at any price.
